Product Code : 11108
Rare Flemish painting from the first half of the 17th century. Oil on panel artwork of great pictorial quality depicting the Ascent to Calvary. After the sentence of condemnation, Christ, mocked and bleeding, was loaded with the cross. According to Roman custom, in fact, the execution had to take place outside the city at Mount Calvary (also called Golgotha) and the condemned man had to carry his cross there. More than 100 characters crowd the composition, almost all well characterized and dressed in contemporary clothes to update the Christian drama. The true protagonists of the table are not the evangelical facts, but the natural theater of the crowd and the splendid landscape. At the center of the composition we find Jesus followed by the two thieves while in front of him we recognize Saint Veronica offering him the veil. In the foreground on the right we find the Madonna fainting in the arms of Mary Magdalene and Saint John the Evangelist. On the left instead we see soldiers in armour, knights and horses masterfully painted down to the smallest details. In the background we see the architecture of Jerusalem while meticulous naturalistic details enrich the scene, such as the sweet dog at the center of the composition. 20th century frame in carved wood, beautifully decorated, with some signs of aging. Painting that has undergone restoration with color recovery in small spots, overall in good state of conservation. Sight size H 33.5 x W 47.5 cm.
