Antique landscape with figures from the 17th century. Oil on canvas painting depicting a splendid Flemish landscape that frames a famous episode of the New Testament, the appearance of Jesus on the road to Emmaus after the resurrection. Two disciples were walking along the road when they met Christ. They did not immediately recognize him and spoke to him of their sadness for the recent and terrible events that had affected their master. He persuaded them to dine with him and at the breaking of the bread they finally recognized him. The painting has a plaque (see photo) with the reference to Jacques D'Arthois (1613-1686) and David Teniers (1610-1690), lacking authentication. The very high quality of execution and the particular type of representation make the veracity of the plaque plausible, also because it was David Teniers who took care of the figures in the landscapes of Jacques D'Arthois. Scenic wood and plaster frame from the 19th century, with some signs of aging. Artwork already restored with relining, replacement of the frame and recoloring in small spots. Overall in excellent state of conservation. Sight size H 60 x W 73 cm.
