20th century plaster sculpture, Saint Catherine of Alexandria
1200 €
Product Code : 10935
Mid-20th century plaster statue depicting Saint Catherine of Alexandria. Work that evidently reproduces a sixteenth-century original in Flemish style. Sculpture finished from the center in a beautiful patina, deliberately painted and patinated in oak. Her Saint is represented with some of her typical iconographic elements, including the open book and the sword, while at her feet we find the Emperor Maximilian. The story goes that the emperor was in Alexandria to celebrate a pagan occasion. The celebration involved the sacrifice of some Christians and Catherine intervened to ask for clemency. To counter the Saint's words, the emperor summoned 50 scholars but Catherine managed to convert them. Maximilian then tried to corrupt her and after numerous torture attempts to obtain a conversion in vain she was finally beheaded. Statue with small flaws and chips (see photo). Structurally sound work, overall in good state of conservation with some signs of aging.
